Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences was given a status of Deemed University from 29th September, 2003 by Human Resource Development Ministry, Govt. of India on the advise of UGC under section (3) of UGC Act 1956 vide their notification No. F-9-11/2000-U.3.

Eligibility Criteria for appearing the Entrance Test.:

Candidate seeking admission to postgraduate Medicine/Dentistry course should hold MBBS /BDS degree of recognized University by MCI/DCI.
A candidate who has completed one year compulsory rotating internship or is likely to complete the same on or before 30 April, 2012 can appear for PIMS-AICET-PG 2012.
All such candidates will have to submit the documentary proof, from the Principal / Dean of the college regarding the likely date of completion of internship along with the manual application form, failing which the application shall be rejected.
A candidate should have obtained permanent registration with MCI/DCI (as the case may be) or any state council. If candidate does not have such registration, he should obtain the same within one month from the date of his/her admission.
Candidates who are previously registered and pursuing/completed the PG degree course or have obtained PG degree, are not eligible for appearing at PIMS-AICET-PG 2012.
Candidates previously admitted to PG degree course and resigned/left the seat are not eligible for appearing at PIMS-AICET-PG 2012.
Candidates who have completed Medicine postgraduate diploma course or would be completing by 31.03.2012 will be eligible for PIMS-AICET-PG 2012 for admission to Medicine postgraduate degree in the same subject only.

First Aid & Emergency Treatment Guide

First Aid is the temporary help given to an injured or a sick person before professional medical treatment can be provided. This timely assistance, comprising of simple medical techniques, is most critical to the victims and is, often, life saving. Any layperson can be trained to administer first aid, which can be carried out using minimal equipments. Basic training in first aid skills should be taught in school, in work places and, in general, be learnt by all, as it is mandatory to our modern and stressful life.

Remember these " ABC's" of first aide.

A) Be sure that the person has an open Airway.

B) Secondly be sure that the person is breathing. An open airway does not mean that the person is breathing. Everyone from young children to elderly adults should be trained in CPR. This training is given free of charge. Check with your local fire department for a location near you.

C) Check for proper Circulation. Check for signs of bleeding. Check for open wounds and for blood soaked clothes. Most bleeding can be temporarily controlled by applying direct pressure to the area. Once you have applied pressure to the area using a clean cloth or gauze pads or what ever you have at hand, do not remove the cloth or gauze from the wound. If it becomes blood soaked apply another pad over the soaked one and continue to apply pressure. In this day and age would also advise any first aide person to wear gloves. There are a number of infections that can be transported via body fluids. These include AIDS as well as Hepatitis. Your welfare is to be considered before your patient's.

If you are coming to the aid of a victim of a fall or trauma type accident where the person has a deformity due to a broken bone(s), do not move the appendage that is involved. If you must splint the appendage, do so in the position found. Check for a pulse distal to the injury before splinting and check for a pulse after splinting. Distal is further from the heart than the fracture.

If the fracture is open and bleeding or bone is visible do not apply direct pressure. Cover the area with a clean dressing. Anytime that a person is injured from a fall or a trauma, remember to keep the person still and hold the head in place. Do not allow the head to rotate. This one simple step may save the persons life. Crouch or lay at the top of the patient and place your hands on both sides of the head. Hold firmly but gently. If the person is awake, talk to him (her) in a soft, even voice. Assure the patient that you are there to help until an ambulance arrives. Assure the patient that you will not leave him (her) alone. Comfort the patient with your voice. Do not release the head until trained help arrives.

Medical emergencies are not in the realm of most first aid rescuers. If you come on to a person that is unconscious or their level of consciousness is low, assure that the person has an open airway and is breathing. Check for bleeding (circulation). What may have started out as a medical problem may turn into a trauma situation due to a fall or other accident brought on by a low level of conciousness

To change the attitude and behavior of the adolescent and youth of the target area by promoting the responsible behavior and healthy practices in respect to sex and its related behavioral problems.
To prevent and control spread of STD/HIV/AIDS in general and the target area In particular

To assess the pre & post intervention knowledge of the youth In the villages and student community & teachers from high school, junior colleges of six Primary Health Centers, in Talukas Shrirampur, Sanganmer & Rahuri regarding sex, and sex related problems and behavior, especially those related to STD/HIV/AIDS
To assess Knowledge, Attitude & Behavior (DAB) regarding sexuality & HIV/AIDS among adolescent and youth population in study & control areas.

Speaking more than 2 languages may be good for your memory

New Delhi, Feb 23 (ANI): A new study has suggested that speaking more than two languages may lower the risk of developing memory problems.

According to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the finding was based on analysis of 230 men and women with an average age of 73 who had spoken or currently spoke two to seven languages.

Of the participants, 44 reported cognitive problems; the rest of the group had no memory issues, reports English.news.cn.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Center for Health Studies from the Public Research Center for Health (in Luxembourg).

The findings showed that those people who spoke four or more languages were five times less likely to develop cognitive problems compared to those who only spoke two languages.

People who spoke three languages were three times less likely to have cognitive problems compared to bilinguals.

In addition, people who currently spoke more than two languages were also four times less likely to have cognitive impairment.

The results accounted for the age and the education of the participants.

"It appears speaking more than two languages has a protective effect on memory in seniors who practice foreign languages over their lifetime or at the time of the study," said study author Magali Perquin. (ANI)
